Matthew Gaudreau

gone but never forgotten

ABOUT

Matthew Gaudreau’s coaching career began in the 2021–2022 season with the Philadelphia Hockey Club, where he served as an assistant coach for both the NCDC and USPHL Premier teams. He continued his coaching journey with the Philadelphia Rebels (NAHL) from 2022 to 2024, also as an assistant coach. In addition to his junior hockey experience, Gaudreau served as the head coach at Gloucester Catholic High School (USHS-NJ) for two seasons, where he played a pivotal role in developing young athletes and fostering a competitive team culture.

Before stepping behind the bench, Gaudreau enjoyed a successful playing career. He competed in the USHL with the Omaha Lancers, posting 40 points over two seasons, before advancing to the NCAA ranks with Boston College. There, his standout 2016–2017 season included 35 points in 40 games. Gaudreau went on to play professionally in the AHL with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Stockton Heat, as well as in the ECHL for the Worcester Railers and Reading Royals. His playing career also included time overseas with Tyringe SoSS in Sweden’s HockeyEttan league.

Matthew was widely respected for his hockey IQ, leadership, and dedication to growing the game—especially among younger players following in his footsteps.

Tragically, Matthew and his brother Johnny Gaudreau, a longtime NHL All-Star and Hobey Baker Award winner, were killed by a drunk driver while cycling on August 29, 2024, in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. Matthew Gaudreau's impact as a player, coach, and role model continues to be felt throughout the hockey community.
